Internship Opp: Invasive Specie Research and Control Project



INTERNSHIP TITLE:          Invasive Specie Research and Control Project

LOCATION:                          College of Menominee Nation Sustainable Development Institute Keshena Campus

                                               INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:
CMN Sustainable Development Institute is in the midst of several exciting projects and is constantly working to expand and improve our sustainability efforts. The focus of this student research opportunity is on research, surveying, monitoring, and control of select invasive species including garlic mustard, butternut canker, beech bark disease, and European earthworms. The resources developed and information synthesized will be used to assess the effects of the presence invasives on forest development, health, productivity and patterns in regeneration across a number of community types.  The intern will work with the Sustainable Development Institute, Menominee Tribal Enterprises and U.W. Platteville.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Internship covers a wide range of activities.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
·         Conduct research on traditional and emerging views on the effects of invasive species on mixed northern hardwood forest ecosystems, particularly related to nutrient cycles and understory plant diversity (primary emphasis will be on earthworm research)
·         Develop a general understanding of using dendrochronology (science of tree rings) for analysis
·         Develop a basic understanding of GPS functions, use, and research applications
·         Conduct field work in the Menominee Forest
·         Conduct lab work and poster development at UW Platteville
·         Give presentations on research activities at multiple locations including CMN, UW Platteville, Madison, WI and California or Oregon 
·         Develop media including photography, video, and social networking(blogging) about activities
·         Assist in organizing  research related events
·         Assist in preparing research findings and recommendations reports
·         Assist with research and special projects as assigned.  Perform other duties and assigned.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
·          Current College Student.  (College of Menominee Nation student preferred)
·          Interest in forest ecology, environmental issues, sustainability topics
·          Computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, Access) a plus.
·          Ability to work and perform physical tasks related to field work data collection

TIMEFRAME AND SALARY:
The internship is from June 6, 2012 to August 1, 2012.  Starting and ending dates are flexible to accommodate the intern’s schedule, but field and lab work will occur between the dates listed. .  The internship is for $12.00 per hour for approximately 32 hours per week.

STUDENT SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY






Oneida High School Visit

Oneida High School students visited SDI as part of the POSOH project and learned about animal adaptation, the forest, and many other place-based concepts.

In the pictures below, you can see student creations of plants and animals. One of the student demonstration stations focused on learning about adaptations, or characteristics that change or adapt to situations or surroundings. Each student made their own creatures and explained how their "being" adapts to the surroundings. They all had great imaginations explaining defense mechanisms, reproductive traits, camouflage, and many more characteristics. Check out pictures below!

Internship Opp: SDI Garden/Permaculture Assistant

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:
A student internship opportunity is being offered through the CMN SDI Place-Based Opportunities for Sustainable Outcomes and High Hopes (POSOH) project to work on the emerging permaculture and garden area by the Water Tower Greenhouse area.  The POSOH project is intended to create opportunities for learners to develop understandings, knowledge, and skills in place-based concepts founded in science and culture, using sustainability education strategies.  CMN Sustainable Development Institute is in the midst of several exciting projects and is seeking to create more place-based sustainability education projects connected to the broader community. As CMN continues to expand its efforts to become more environmentally sustainable, one of the areas in which it is expanding is in food resilience, agroforestry and permaculture.  The intern will be responsible for working with the Sustainability Education Coordinator to maintain the garden area, help with MTE Greenhouse project, keep garden records, and work with high school permaculture project. 

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Internship activities cover a wide range of permaculture and garden projects and activities.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
·         Work collaboratively to maintain and expand garden area—including greenhouse, beds, compost, orchard, in watering, cultivation, seeding, and transplanting.
·         Actively participate as a member of the SDI POSOH 8th grade curriculum design team June 18-21.
·         Assist in designing and developing place-based sustainability projects and lessons with high school students.
·         Travel to Tsyunhehkwa to learn from their agriculture system on a weekly basis.
·         Document daily activities and establish record keeping system for planting.
·         Research sustainable food and medicine systems related to Menominee culture.
·         Attend Project Team meetings and summits.
·         Perform general office duties (data entry, filing, mailings, photocopying, etc.)
·         Assist with tours, research, special projects, and other duties as assigned.
·

·          College of Menominee Nation Student. (Required to be enrolled for Fall 2012).
·          Experience in gardening, permaculture, agroforestry, and/or sustainable food and medicine systems.
·          Interest in community food resilience, agriculture, ethnobotany, greenhouse management, and permaculture.
·          Experience in working with high school students a plus.
·          Must be a self-starter, willing to work in all kinds of weather.
·          Must be able to work collaboratively as a team member with various interests and age groups.
·          Must have reliable transportation to travel to Tsyunhehkwa in Oneida once per week.

The POSOH project is intended to create opportunities for learners to develop understandings, knowledge, and skills in place-based concepts founded in science and culture, using sustainability education strategies.  CMN Sustainable Development Institute is in the midst of several exciting projects and is seeking to create more place-based sustainability education projects in the broader community. As CMN continues to expand its efforts to become more environmentally sustainable, one of the areas in which it has been a leader for many years is in education and outreach.  The intern will be responsible for working with the Sustainability Education Coordinator to design, coordinate, and implement hands-on education projects for a wide range of audiences in the community.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Internship activities cover a wide range of sustainable education projects and activities.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Assist with tours, research, and special projects as assigned.

·          Knowledge of forestry and/or agriculture a plus.

Student Opportunity to visit Portland, OR

On behalf of The Wildlife Society (TWS) and the Native Peoples Wildlife Management Working Group (NPWG) of The Wildlife Society, I am pleased to announce the 2012 Native Student Professional Development Grants Program. This years grants program is a competitive program available to all Native American, Alaska Natives, First Nations, native Hawaiian or indigenous tribal students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program studying natural resources or natural resource management.

Grant funds will enable students to attend the 19th Annual Conference of The Wildlife Society, to be held in Portland, Oregon, October 13-18, 2012. Individuals selected for this program will receive travel grants to help cover registration fees, lodging, meals and transportation to the conference. All indigenous students in a relevant academic discipline are strongly encouraged to apply. Please note the application deadline is JULY 13, 2012 so please post and distribute this announcement to any and all potentially interested individuals, agencies or organizations. Student Government Earth Day Cleanup

College of Menominee Nation Student Government organized a highway cleanup on April 21st. Thank you to this great group of student and community leaders for volunteering their time. Their efforts help to keep the highway clean and animals safe from roadside garbage. The group was proud to announce that they collected 23 bags of trash! Job well done! Waewaenen!
